About the impressive Mt. Khangchendzonga

Mt. Khangchendzonga or the Kanchenjunga mountain range is an iconic landmark encircled by 3 territories: Tibet in the north, Nepal in the west and Sikkim in the east and south. It is a spectacular mountain range that ranks 3rd in terms of absolute height and first in terms of the highest massif. Mt. Khangchendzonga is the empress of all mountains when it comes to its majestic panorama from the hill station of Darjeeling that is absolutely incomparable by all standards. Adventure tourism in Mt. Khangchendzonga is a hard to miss action mainly comprising mountain climbing and trekking.
Mt. Khangchendzonga in Tibetan terms means ‘Five treasures of the great snow’. It represents god’s five repositories namely silver, gold, grain, holy books and gems. This monarch among mountains is adorned by five summits, four of which are posited at an altitude of over 27,720ft. The four enormous ridges of incredible dimensions of snow, ice and rocks sit grandly upon this massif, culminating into a peak that measures around 28,169ft high. These huge ridges are named as per their directions in regard to the colossal centerpiece they are attached to.
The first ever expedition to the mountain of Kanchenjunga was led by a British team consisting of George Band and Joe Brown in 25th May 1955. While conquering Mt. Khangchendzonga, ‘the height of the gods’, the expedition team made it a point to honor the Sikkimese belief by halting a few feet away from the actual zenith of the mountain range that is regarded as a sacred place. Since then, this has been a tradition followed by the rest of the conquerors of Mt. Khangchendzonga.
If you run your eyes from the Darjeeling hill station observatory hill over the hoary range, Kanchenjunga appears as a sparkling silver cirque right from the west to east, invincibly covered with ice and snow. The key chain that interlinks the main Himalayan range, Mt. Khangchendzonga exudes illusionary beauty with its dazzling snow-white cloaked peaks and miles of distance from the urban settings.
Mt. Khangchendzonga is accessible through the Sikkim route via Zemu Glacier and Lachen. Here you can see the north ridge and the East Ridge standing with full grandeur.
Trekking in Mt. Khangchendzonga on its western wing is a real challenge, being the lengthiest of all routes. At the foot of the Mt. Khangchendzonga lies the Kanchenjunga glacier. The western ridge takes you to the Ramthang Glacier, if you wish to traverse some extra kilometers. Finally, the south-western face of Mt. Khangchendzonga comes into view from the ‘Queen of the Hills’ Darjeeling. While on your adventure tourism to Mt. Khangchendzonga, Darjeeling offers a great access to the destination. You have to move from Talung crossing the Yalung Glacier which is probably the last route through the Sikkim state. Trekking to Mt. Khangchendzonga through this route will let you take a sneak peek into the outskirts of Nepal.

After an emotional Mamata Banerjee said – ‘Darjeeling is my Switzerland baby’, hope sprung across the ‘Queen of the Hills’ when the West Bengal chief minister came under an accord this July 2011 with the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha in a bid to settle down the ongoing problems within the hill station. The Darjeeling Mall witnessed a bouquet of sobriquets and promises made by the chief minister trying to reach out to the people of the hills with an enthusiasm rarely seen!   Darjeeling now has an elected, autonomous council named as the Gorkha Territorial Administration that will work in unison giving the best of both worlds to the people of Darjeeling.

With ‘unity on lips’, Mamata Banerjee denied all plans of separating the land of Darjeeling from the Bengal borders, serenading rhythms in describing the queen of the hills as her ‘baby’, ‘darling’ along with her vision of turning it into the ‘Indian Switzerland’! For further developments and reform she even promised a fund of Rs. 500 crore from the central government for reforming the recent earthquake hit areas of Darjeeling.

The delegation led by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha chief Bimal Gurung also demanded a supporting fund of Rs. 1,000 crore to the chief minister for pursuing development of the hill region. Stressing over the perspective of Darjeeling and its importance in the state of West Bengal, the Chief Minister eloquently came up with her emotional connection with the hills. Stating Darjeeling as the heart of Bengal, she even promised to solve all unemployment issues of the region.

Some of the announcements that have come with this fresh pact include:

  • Over all development of the hills, a master plan for Darjeeling Tourism in under progress.
  • Foundation stone was laid in the Darjeeling Mall for beautification with a whopping project cost of Rs.10 crore.
  • Air conditioned buses from Darjeeling to several routes.
  • Landscaping at the Tiger Hills.
  • For highlighting Mirik as a popular hill station; renovation of the tourist lodges is on the cards.
  • Renovation of Planter’s club, Gymkhana club and St. Andrew’s Church will be undertaken.
  • Adventure tourism in Darjeeling is also on the list for development. Trekking routes are to be developed along Maneybhanjan to Sandakphu that will transform adventure tourism in Darjeeling to a whole new dimension.
  • Construction of Ropeway at the Neora Valley Park, Namring, Delo and Rohini.
  • In an attempt to tap the fame of the orange orchards of Darjeeling, an orange festival is on the helm that will be hosted in the chilly winters of December.

Soon after the completion of the Master tourism plan, Darjeeling along with its neighboring areas like Dooars and Terai are going to receive a face lift.

Siddhesvar_Dhaam, Namchi, South Sikkim

Sikkim tourism is definitely going to get a great high with the completion of the Siddhesvar Dhaam  (scheduled to be inaugurated on 8th November 2011), otherwise called the ‘Chaar Dhaam’ of the Himalayan kingdom. Situated at the Solophok Hill, a 5 kms distance from the South Sikkim district headquarters Namchi, the Siddhesvar Dhaam is soon going to be one of the major pilgrimage centers of India. While planning for your Sikkim tours make sure to visit this marvelous site. A must include destination in your Sikkim tours itinerary.
A facsimile of the actual Chaar Dhaam, the architecture of this pilgrimage cum cultural site is unique that brings the four sacred pilgrimages of India at a single destination that includes the West as Dwarika, East Jagannath, North as Badrinath Dham and South as Rameshawaram. This colossal pilgrimage center boasts a 108 ft deity of Lord Shiva, sitting atop a platform which is further enclosed by the replicas of the 12 temples or the 12 ‘Lingas’, eminent part of the Chaar Dhaam spread across India.
To make this monument even more impressive and grand, a mock-up structure of Shirdi Sai Baba temple and an effigy of Lord Kirateshwara has been planned for construction. Considered an extremely holy place by the local people, the Siddhesvar Dhaam has a special place in the lives of the Sikkimese. This place is regarded as the haven for obtaining salvation, prosperity and peace to the fullest. To add to the grandeur of this holy shrine, the local people nurture a strong belief in anticipation that says only visiting this religious site washes away all the sins of a lifetime.

The Siddhesvar Dhaam is surely going to be a highlighting factor for the Sikkim tourism board. To grab further tourist attention, a Yatri Niwas with 96 beds, a Dormitory, Lockers / ATM’s, an area for 4-D simulator ride, drivers’ room, a VIP guest house and the depiction of the journey to the Dham’s and the Jyotirlinga’s has been built nearby the religious project. There are other eye-catchers too in and around the temple area like an Art and Culture gallery exhibiting typical Sikkimese art form.
The pilgrimage center is beautifully festooned with lush green plants and fountains at different levels. Adding to one’s spiritualism- the transcendental music that plays in the background turns the entire atmosphere pure and divine. For better and smooth connectivity, a ropeway facility is under progress that will connect Namchi town with Samdruptse, again touching down Chaar Dhaam so that tourists coming for pilgrimage tour to Namchi across the world can enjoy the panoramic vista of this chunk of heaven on earth!
Namchi, being the capital of the south Sikkim region is already catching worldwide attention as an ideal tourist destination for its virgin beauty. Then it has the Namchi Monastery, the Tedong Hill and the Ralong Monastery adding up to the attraction. And with the completion of this monumental project, it is bound to catch the limelight as a prominent pilgrimage center of India! A pilgrimage tour to Namchi is definitely a worthy break to delve into spiritualism!

History of the mighty Nathu la Pass

Once called the ‘Silk Route’ during the ancient times, Nathu la pass serves as a prominent trade link on the Indo-Chinese border. Located just 52 kms away from Gangtok and elevated at an altitude of 14,450ft, Nathu la is the abode of a variety of Alpine flora and fauna. In 1873, Nathu la was realized as a significant route, following which it played an integral role during the 1903-1904 British Expedition to Tibet.

In 1904, The Commissioner of Tibet, Yound Husband headed for a winning expedition through Nathu La for capturing Lhasa. A number of trading posts were set up due to this event by the British Government. Later on, Sikkim was asked to join the Independent Indian border as a protectorate and since then, this pass served as a major zone between China and India.
